Testing a Bite‐Shortened Hook to Minimize Fish Handling in a Recreational Fishery

چکیده

Discard mortality can make fishing unsustainable, even in catch-and-release or highly regulated fisheries. However, practices and gears that minimize hook injury, handling, air exposure considerably improve fitness survival released fish. This study tested whether modified hooks could allow anglers to successfully land then release fish the water without handling. Standard, barbless, bite-shortened were used catch Spotted Seatrout Cynoscion nebulosus (n > 75 per type), logistic models assess differences landing success self-release by type categorical size. Average was >90% with all three types. Bite-shortened able from 87% of landed fish, compared rates 47% using barbless 20% standard hooks. Small had higher both unintentional during reel-in intentional handling-free boatside. Size selectivity not observed. Continued gear testing appears warranted other lure types, species, a diversity anglers. With further validation, self-releasing for recreational opportunities sensitive fisheries areas, e.g., no-take aquatic reserves, minimal discard effects.

Empirical Evidence for Species-Specific Export of Fish Naïveté from a No-Take Marine Protected Area in a Coastal Recreational Hook and Line Fishery

No-take marine protected areas (MPAs) are assumed to enhance fisheries catch via the "spillover" effect, where biomass is exported to adjacent exploited areas. Recent studies in spearfishing fisheries suggest that the spillover of gear-naïve individuals from protected to unprotected sites increases catch rates outside the boundaries of MPAs. Whether this is a widespread phenomenon that also hol...
